It’s Schizophrenia Awareness Day. The last 18 years of my parent’s marriage was spent being care givers to my brother Peter. Pete drew a very short straw in life’s lottery, because he was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of thirty.
What wonderful parents you had! They're an inspiration. Your brother would have suffered a much different fate were it not for their deep understanding and self sacrifice. I upgraded to founding member.
I understand this deeply. My son spent three months in hospital last year. He lived with us until April, when, after refusing to take medication, he became threatening in his extreme anxiety and paranoia.
We have been searching for appropriate housing but no luck yet.
I have no idea what the future holds. I’ve lost my son, but I still keep track of him and try to help.
