Over the last 18 months of his life Harry Leslie Smith recorded a series of audio tapes. On them, he spoke about how the 21st century was beginning to resemble the Great Depression world of his youth. "I refuse to remain quiet while the world my generation built turns feral in the hands of right-wing populists and capitalists indifferent to the wellbeing of ordinary workers. Too many people died, and too many lives were cut short or mangled by the Great Depression and the Second World for me to not speak out. I will oppose to my the last breath the 1% and their politicians who destroyed liberal society constructed on the foundation of a Welfare State and are now attempting to erect a fascist, authoritarian society."
Powerful voice originating from the past. Intellectually, I knew this history, but hearing Harry’s voice, a voice that actually experienced this horror generated by the 1%, makes everything so real & tangible and not just what I have read documented in history books. His voice makes me want to continue the fight but also makes me ready to pass on from this seemingly hopeless situation. I will keep fighting the 1% but I am not optimistic.
I think Harry talks about the NHS but I think the 1% in Britain is just as corrupt as US. I am in US where our health care is shambles unless you are 1%. We have highest costs and poorest outcomes, and so many citizens have no health insurance. I don’t know enough about Health Canada. I have always heard that Canadians have good national healthcare. Do they?

NHS or Health Canada?
